Do you really know how to shave your face, for women? Like, are they using shaving cream? Do they use the same type of razor they use on their legs? Don’t they have thick facial hair now? And is there a proper or best way? The purpose of this blog is to answer these burning dermaplane and face shaving questions and then some in this step-by-step guide on how to safely and effectively shave your face.

Benefits of shaving your face (at-home Dermaplane)

  • Removes dead skin cells
  • Improves the appearance of your pores (or at least makes them look smaller)
  • Allows you to “exfoliate” more efficiently when you chemical exfoliate
  • Makes certain products work better, since they can get through your skin and into your pores a little more easily
  • Helps with redness and rosacea, by making it easier to exfoliate the surface of your skin to remove dead cells/oil/etc.
  • Can keep makeup from settling into fine lines and wrinkles, since the skin is smoother.
  • Helps with ingrown hairs/spots, since facial hair grows in different directions than body hair.
  • Can help protect you/others from bacteria/viruses that are spread via touch i.e., if one of your kids gets a cold and touches your face

To prepare for a proper dermaplane (skin polishing/face shaving) it is best to remove build-up a few days before, cleanse the skin, and open up pores. So if you shave every other Friday, you’ll do your face scrub on the Monday or Tuesday before.

Does the hair grow back thicker?

I hear many women that have been shaving their faces for years preach that their hair doesn’t grow back thicker. Personally, my hair feels more noticeable when I rub my fingers across my face. Like, I don’t remember feeling my peach fuzz like this.

But I think this is because the hair is cut differently. Like that “tip” that makes hair feel thin at the end has been shaved off so now the hair feels a bit thicker. That does not mean it grew back thicker. It’s just cut differently now so feels more noticeable.

I’m still going to continue shaving my face. My skin does look and feel great. The first time I did it, my skin looked and felt smoother. I was shocked, actually. Did not notice that much smoothness after just one time shaving properly.

On to the process.

Materials

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Exfoliator
  • Non-comedogenic oil
  • Hydration mist (optional)
  • Cotton pads or cotton balls (however you use your toner)

Tools

  • Women's razor for face
  • Face steamer

Instructions

1) Cleanse:

Remove dirt, oils, products, and bacteria to make sure you’re not spreading germs and causing irritation. I cleanse my face for a minute or so.

Sensivitve-skin friendly: BYBI Milk Melt Oat Milk Facial Cleanser

2) Tone:

Rosewater toner to remove anything the cleansing didn’t get up.

Helps keep skin soothed: Heritage Store Rosewater Facial Toner

4) Steam:

Moisturizes, opens up pores, and softens hair before shaving.

Pamper yourself: Vanity Planet Aria Facial Steamer

5) Use a slick oil on your face

Do not rub in the oil. Put a layer on your face to protect the skin while shaving and to smooth the process. Use a non-comedogenic oil to keep your pores from getting clogged.

Luxurious: cocokind Chia Facial Oil

6) Shave downwards at a 45-degree angle

Use the opposite hand that your razor is in to lift your skin for smoother shaving. Hold the razor at a 45-degree angle and shave downward in short strokes. I made the mistake of shaving all the way down. Missed fuzz that way.

Highly effective: GiGi Face + Brow Razors

7) Tone again

After you finish shaving, rinse and then tone again.

8) Sooth

Spray with a hydration mist to calm the skin. I use Honest Beauty Hydration Mist.

Calms the skin and feels nice after shaving: Honest Beauty Elevated Hydration Misthttps

9) Enjoy

Enjoy your smooth, renewed, polished skin. 🙂
